Marks of Another Gospel
Even if we or an angel preach another gospel than that which we have preached to you, let him be accursed. Galatians 1:8
Today, there are so many teachings branded as Christian teaching. Many are cajoled and deceived by the use of the word “mystery” to describe the gospel as to introduce so many new philosophies and ideas of men which is not really new but a rebranding or repacking of ancient heresies which Paul and other Apostles contested vehemently but because of we are in a age where knowledge of the Scriptures is lacking and these foreign teachings are now being embraced as new revelations from God (mystery).
The purpose for this write up presently is not to highlight these heretical teachings but to give a mark of identity for these other gospels.
Do not be led away by diverse and strange teachings,…
So that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. Eph. 4:13-14.
This is a generation where we are not careful or pay heed to doctrine. Many are not grounded and grafted in what they believe. That is why I love the Catholics, they are so deep rooted in their doctrines and beliefs. A Catholic priest was reported to have said, give me a child for the first six years of his life and he would remain a Catholic for life. The writer of Hebrews tells us that there are strange doctrines flying here and there coated under the guise of mysteries but they are all products of human cunningness (inventions) and the craftiness of human philosophy to deceive and cajole.
A major mark of every strange gospel is self. It could be self advertisement/accumulation like in the prosperity movement or self righteousness as in
the Moralist movement. It could also be self indulgence like in the Perverse Grace Movement. Self realization/ actualization in the Philosophical or Motivational Movement and self protection in the Syncretism Movement. The gospel points to Christ and what He has done on the cross but another gospel turns to self and revolves around self. It is birthed in pride which is cloaked or covered in spirituality. Unlike Paul who says he preached nothing else than Christ not with eloquence of speech so that their faith would not rest on the wisdom of man but the power of God, 1 Cor. 2:1-5, these men are self promoters and in Peter’s words, boastful and speaking high things than they can comprehend 2 Peter 2:10-12, 18.
Assignment: Take a proper assessment of the sermons you will listen to for the next one month, are they Christ promoting or self promoting? The answer to this question determines if you are sitting under sound or false teachers.
